Zach Walling, a junior from Anthem, Ariz., is big part of Eastern New Mexico University’s track team. He is in his first year as a Greyhound after transferring from Scottsdale Community College. Walling, who also is on the cross-country team, runs the 1500-meter for track.
Chase: When did you decide you wanted to take track seriously?
Walling: I wanted to take track seriously the spring of my freshmen year in college. So it would have been Spring 2012 when I realized I could make it to nationals.
Chase: If you could run anywhere in the world, where would you run?
Walling: I would want to do the Great Wall of China marathon.
Chase: What is your favorite memory you have had from running track?
Walling: My favorite memory from track is qualifying for indoor nationals in the 1000-meter in Spring semester 2013 while running at Scottsdale Community College.
Chase: What do you like about running track for ENMU?
Walling: All of my teammates are so dedicated not only in running but in school as well.
Chase: Do you have any rituals before a track meet?
Walling: I always have to carb up and hydrate the day before, and eat four hours before I start warming up for the race.
Chase: Is there anything else special ENMU students should know about you?
Walling: I am the treasurer of VOICES. VOICES is the education club on campus. I’m also a nutrition and fitness encyclopedia.
