The news is filled with devastating stories, photos, and video clips covering the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey, and now Hurricane Irma. Each time I read the news or turn on the TV, I am deeply saddened; I feel as though I cannot do much to help, especially being hundreds of miles away, not to mention being in college. However, the past few days I have found myself continuing to look for ways to help.
I went on a mission to find companies that are donating all of their proceeds to hurricane victims, through nonprofit organizations. In my search, I found three stores that are doing just that:
- Magnolia Market: Chip and Joanna Gaines, beloved stars of the television series, “Fixer Upper,” are selling what they call “Texas Forever Shirts” and are giving 100% of the proceeds to Hurricane Harvey disaster relief efforts. This shirt is perfect for everyday wear, exercising or even to give as a gift.

2. Golden Thread: A Houston based shop, Golden Thread, is selling a variety of unique necklaces and are using proceeds to purchase supplies for local shelters. They are beautiful necklaces, again, perfect for yourself or as a gift for someone.

- Etsy: There are countless shops on Etsy selling handmade goods like jewelry, clothing, decals, and even water bottles that are giving all proceeds to Hurricane victims.

These stores are allowing me to maximize my resources as a college student, by spending money on gifts I need to buy anyway, and also being able to make a donation to help people that are in desperate need. My hope is that this will allow other people to donate as well, even when money is tight.
