Dear Crabby—Not the College Dropout

Dear Crabby,

I am experiencing a college-life crisis. All of my friends are telling me about the classes that they registered for, and I had no idea that it was time to register for new classes. Where did this semester go? I guess I am in a sophomore funk. I like being in college, but I don’t feel like I am in the right major. I am not even sure that I am college material despite the fact that I do enjoy being in college. I’m tired of living on campus. I am tired of eating the same meals over and over again in the CUB. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I don’t want to drop out of college. That would just make me feel like a complete and utter failure. At the same time, I don’t know what courses to take. I feel like I should continue taking courses in my current major. It seems like the practical thing to do. What if I don’t take courses in my major and end up pushing back my graduation date? I don’t want to be stuck in college forever when I could have just stayed on track. I wouldn’t even know what other major would interest me. I hate wasting my time with things I am not interested in. This is my current struggle with my major, and I fear it will be the same struggle if I switch majors.

Please help,

Not the College Dropout

Dear Not the College Dropout,

Sounds like you are definitely in a funk. There is hope, though! First, think about your interests and your passions. What are they? Is it anything you could do for a living? If you’re feeling stuck in your major, maybe it IS time for a change. Why did you choose your current major? Did you ever have an interest in it, or was it just there? It’s kind of like eating at the CUB every day. It might not be what you want, but it’s there, so you eat it. Every day, same classes, every day, same food. It can get old. BUT—the new semester is a great opportunity for change. Maybe take some lower division electives in another field of study. Want different food? Take some culinary classes and make your own! Take a new HPE course and challenge yourself physically. Expand your knowledge in other areas then decide if a change of major is for you. Learning new things is rarely a waste of time. Talk to your advisor, and stay in school. Life’s too short for unbridled apathy. Find your happy. It’s worth it (and this is coming from a lifelong cynical curmudgeon).
