College students are often familiar with struggling to balance school, social life, work, and personal life. Wellness can be challenging to strive for in the best of times, and dealing with the uncertainty of COVID-19 makes it much more complicated. To help students at Eastern New Mexico University be conscious of their wellness, Counseling and Career Services is hosting Wellness Wednesdays through Facebook Live.
“We wanted to let students know that we are still here, regardless of where they are at,” said Wellness Counselor Blessy Joseph.
During the first Wellness Wednesday, Joseph talked with Wendy Gilman and Amanda McCormick, both Career Counselors at ENMU. Students watching live were encouraged to chime in as well.
What is wellness, exactly? Joseph explained that there are eight dimensions to wellness, including physical, social, emotional, spiritual, financial, environmental, intellectual, and occupational. These are all intertwined, so if an individual is struggling in one area, other areas will suffer as well. Maintaining social wellness is particularly difficult in the current coronavirus circumstances, but through technology and apps such as Marco Polo and Whatsapp, there are ways to stay connected with friends and family.
Topics throughout September will include suicide awareness, pollution prevention, and even a little bit of yoga. Each session will feature a different guest speaker, and will start on Wednesdays between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Joseph encouraged students to follow ENMU Counseling and Career Services on social media to stay up to date on the exact start time each week.
