Why I Transferred to ENMU?

By Julian Gagnon

Hound Bytes would like us to take some time to reflect on the start of a new semester.  As a transfer student, my journey to ENMU was not a straight path.  I began at another university and completed one semester before I decided to find a better option.  ENMU was not even in my original top two universities, and I didn’t learn about ENMU until my first semester was finished.  But after discovering the online options for ENMU and speaking with the staff here, it became clear that ENMU was the right choice for me.

My first contact with ENMU was an email to Dr. Dobson.  Her immediate, personalized, and warm response with answer to questions I hadn’t even thought of, but that she knew I would need to know, was enough for me to begin my application the next day (If you have not already read our tribute edition to Dr. Dobson, please check it out!).  Although I didn’t know her as long as others, Dr. Dobson was a major reason I chose ENMU.  I am only writing for Hound Bytes now because of her support.  I know I’m not alone in wishing that I had more time to learn from her.

One of my biggest complaints about my previous classes was the student to staff ratio.  This particular university had a partnership with a few large U.S. corporations and classes had 75 students.  There were graduate assistants in each class, but the ratio was still 25:1.  None of the courses that I’ve registered for at ENMU come close to that number.  Consequently, I get more individual attention and feedback from my professors.  I’ve begun to build real relationships with them, and they have a much better understanding of areas that I need improvement.

The last major influence on my decision to attend ENMU was something that we all thing and worry about- cost!  My previous university was twice as expensive and there was virtually no chance that I would have received a graduate assistant position.  With Dr. Dobson’s help, my tuition is now affordable, and I can finally stop stressing over payments.
