What happens when a historical wind storm comes across a small town, many might think that it would look like the end of the world happened from one minute to the next, however oftentimes that is not the case. Many people tend to stay inside as much as they can in order to stay away from the wind, but what happens to those who have to be outside for work. Within Lea County there are three dairy farms that have to be managed and operational everyday no matter the situation, not to mention certain oil field companies have to maintain the production levels in order to not fall behind. But what about those small mom and pop businesses? When it comes to high winds they often want to stay open but sometimes it is dangerous to do so.
During the wind storm on March 14, many establishments chose to close for the day in order to keep their customer base safe, however, others had to close due to power outages. Whatever the reason was to close, these closures could make or break their month to make sure every bill is taken care of. But what happens when on top of this wind storm, there is road construction happening in front of your place of business? Some establishments had this problem, with the construction happening they had a dip in traffic to their establishment now add on top of that the wind storm and there is a bad combination for the business owner.
When it comes to these high gusts of wind, almost reaching 100 miles an hour in some parts, there is no doubt that there will be damage to anything in its path. One of the biggest things that can be damaged are roofs, sometimes having complete ceilings coming off of the structures. During this round of wind gusts some structures got damaged causing electricity to turn off in certain areas, not to mention the damage it caused to homes as well as other open buildings that had zero to no way to break the wind or at the very least slow it down.
When it comes to natural disasters no one is ready to make the necessary precautions to have little to no damage. However, the small businesses often do not have the funds to make those preparation in order to prevent damage, but instead would invest the small amount of funds that they have into the same business or even their employees, this in order to keep them happy and not having to hire someone else that would have to be trained and build a relationship with the existing team. Small businesses, especially those who are family owned are the ones that suffer the most when it comes to situations like the one everyone experienced on March 14 2025.
