From Pecos, New Mexico, 21-year-old senior Katie Montaño is our HoundBytes online magazine assistant editor. Studying at Eastern New Mexico University for her Bachelor of Science in Communication with an emphasis in broadcast production and a minor in business, Katie enjoys spending time behind a camera. While pursuing her degree, she has discovered a liking for journalism and the process of reporting compelling information. The research and involvement required to build a great story is a challenge she finds engaging and through this experience as assistant editor, she hopes to polish her writing skills.
At a young age, with no television and many trips to the library, Katie found an understanding of the power words have. Fiction novels are her favorite, as they feel like an escape from the real world built in your mind and although she does not hold allegiance to any one genre of literature, she likes mystery and crime novels that involve investigation and surprising discoveries.
“Being a journalist is interesting to me because it’s like being a detective and learning things you might not have otherwise known without digging for information,” she stated. She also is fascinated with true crime documentaries and Investigation Discovery Network.
When Katie is not working or in school, she likes time in the mountains, listening to music and moments with her boyfriend and dog unwinding and watching Netflix.
